Gordhan: NHI won’t increase tax burden

Pretoria – South Africa will fund a proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) programme through the fiscus, employers’ contributions and other funding mechanisms, and the government does not want the plan to increase the burden on taxpayers, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Thursday.

Law lets Sars collect first, argue later

Johannesburg – The conditions under which taxpayers can be exempted from the pay now, argue later rule in tax disputes have been clarified by a legal change that took effect on February 1, the South African Revenue Service (Sars) said on Monday.

New PAYE tax process for SMEs

Johannesburg – Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should brace themselves for the first biannual PAYE tax reconciliation process, which starts on Wednesday and closes at the end of October 2010.

“It is important that companies bear in mind that the biannual submission is completed for reconciliation purposes only. Payroll departments should not issue the tax certificates to their employees,” said Grant Lloyd, managing director at payroll and HR software specialist Softline Pastel Payroll.

PAYE employers will have to register all staff for tax

For the 2010/11 tax year, all employers registered for Pay As You Earn will have to ensure that their employees have tax numbers, even if these employees do not qualify to pay tax.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) plans to make it compulsory for anyone who is paid by an employer that is registered for Pay As You Earn (PAYE) to register as a taxpayer, even if they earn below the tax threshold or are employed part time.
